The catalytic converter container ("Cat Can") holds the catalytic converter substrate, which is surrounded by a foam mat, within the exhaust stream. The substrate is coated with a porous wash containing precious metals, which initiate chemical reactions to reduce harmful emissions. In order to maximize catalyst efficiency and withstand high exhaust temperatures, the substrate features extremely thin walls and is made from ceramic. This causes the substrate to be a very fragile component that requires a robust container to ensure long term durability.

In many cases the catalytic converter may be mounted directly to the exhaust manifold in order to reduce catalyst "light off" time. Wescast currently utilizes this design concept of cast exhaust manifolds and catalytic converter containers for some of Nissan’s 3.5L V6 engines.
